The department of Mathematics was started in 1955. The department of Mathematics has 3 full time faculties. It also has a part time management appointed administrative staff. The department offers an undergraduate programme in Mathematics.
A bachelor’s degree in mathematics prepares one for jobs in statistics, actuarial sciences, mathematical modelling and mathematics education as well as for graduate school leading to a research career in mathematics or statistics. A strong background in mathematics is also necessary for research in many areas of computer science and social sciences.
The mathematics Department caters to the needs of 30-40 students in each year who want to specialize in Mathematics and nearly 200 others for whom it is an essential tool. Every year students who want to major in Physics or Statistics take mathematics as a second major. This will be very useful in their coming prosperous future. The total intake is fixed due to the rules and regulations of the Gujarat University.
Students who want to choose an academic career (research, teaching and curriculum development) opt for a major in mathematics. Studying mathematics develops skills such as arguing logically and rigorously, formulating and solving problems and analyzing data. Consequently, Mathematics majors perform well in competitive exams like UPSC, GPSC, TAS, CAT, GMAT banking exams, etc. So students who want to pursue M.B.A, M.C.A, P.G.D.C.A. or to appear for banking and insurance sector exams prefer to take mathematics as a main subject.
